Navigating AI in Higher Ed: Practical Frameworks for Presidents and Leaders

February 5, 2026

Navigating AI in Higher Ed

Artificial intelligence (AI) has moved from a buzzword to a boardroom priority in higher education. For college and university presidents, the question is no longer if AI will reshape their institutions, it’s how to adopt it responsibly and strategically.

Ellucian’s recent webinar, Navigating AI Adoption in Higher Ed: College Presidents on Student Learning vs Operational Efficiency, brought together two presidents—Dr. Susana Rivera-Mills of Aurora University and Dr. Alberto Cardelle of SUNY Oneonta—alongside Dr. Joe Sallustio, SVP and Chief of Industry Engagement at Ellucian. Together, they explored a pressing question: Should institutions prioritize AI investments that enhance student learning or those that improve operational efficiency? Their candid discussion revealed that the answer isn’t binary; instead, it’s about building a unified, mission-driven approach.

Why AI Matters for Higher Education Right Now

The urgency is clear. According to Ellucian’s AI Industry Report, the adoption of AI tools by university administrators has grown rapidly, and 93% expect their use of AI at work to increase significantly through 2026.

This acceleration is driven by multiple forces including employers demanding graduates with AI fluency, students already experimenting with AI tools, and institutions facing operational pressures to do more with less. These interwoven areas highlight a crucial fact: AI isn’t just a technological upgrade—it’s a cultural shift requiring agility, governance, and vision.

Aligning Priorities: Student Success and Institutional Strength

Rather than treating these priorities as competing, leaders are finding ways to advance both. Aurora University launched a campus-wide initiative that integrates AI into curriculum, operations, and career development simultaneously. One standout example: virtual reality-based job interview simulations paired with AI career coaching, giving students real-time feedback to boost confidence and readiness.

SUNY Oneonta established a Presidential Task Force on AI with broad participation, ensuring shared governance and transparency. This approach reflects a growing consensus: AI adoption must align with institutional mission and involve faculty, staff, and students in shaping its academic and operational dimensions.

Frameworks for Strategic AI Implementation

Ellucian’s latest draws on our conversations with presidents to explore how institutional leaders can build AI-ready cultures, strengthen operational efficiency, safeguard academic integrity, and prepare learners for a workforce where AI fluency is essential.

At its core is a three-pillar Model:

  • Operational Transformation: Automating manual processes and centralizing technology purchasing can free staff time and reduce risk. Leaders should pair innovation with governance—secure platforms, compliance workflows, and clear data standards.
  • Teaching & Learning Innovation: AI is reshaping pedagogy, shifting focus from what students produce to how they think. Faculty are redesigning assignments to emphasize reasoning, synthesis, and reflection. Rather than fearing plagiarism, institutions can leverage AI to deepen critical thinking and creativity.
  • Workforce Preparation: Employers increasingly expect graduates to demonstrate AI fluency. Integrating AI literacy into curricula and career services—through tools like VR simulations and AI-driven feedback—ensures students are ready for a rapidly evolving job market.

The paper also introduces a Four-Stage Maturity Model, guiding institutions from grassroots experimentation to transformational, campus-wide integration. And because innovation without guardrails can create risk, leaders are urged to establish centralized governance, equity measures, and iterative policies that evolve with technology.

Embracing AI with Vision and Purpose

For higher education, AI represents an opportunity to reimagine how institutions serve students and operate efficiently. Presidents who lead with vision, ethics, and collaboration will position their campuses for long-term success in an increasingly AI-driven landscape.
