A self-service portal that helps students stay on track

Self-service student portal

Key takeaways

  • Improving completion rates is a critical goal for most institutions.
  • Giving students the right tools empowers them in their degree planning and progress monitoring.
  • Self-service plays a key role in enabling students to play an active role.

Aysha Hogue, senior George Mason University:

The portal website that we use to see our journey to our degree has been one of the key components for me as a college student. It's really, really helpful sometimes, if I can't get in touch with my advisor, to just be able to log on and just see exactly what I'm doing and what I have left to do.

I think, a lot of times, especially in college, there are so many options for classes and you can get kind of lost in them, and you don't really understand what you need to take in order to graduate when you want to. And so I think having those updates and having programs that show you your journey and the steps that you need take is definitely very helpful. It's one of the things that I use all the time.

Chris, senior, Virginia Polytechnic Institute:

The way I like to keep track of my academic process and the degree completion is by going to our self-service portal, where-- it's called the degree audit. It tells you what courses you're missing and what you're going to need for graduation, and when you're going to graduate if you keep up that track.

Being able to do a degree audit by myself has tremendously improved my academic career. I've experienced, for half of my academic career at community college where I did not have that type of system. It was a lot harder to get answers, and you had to go through the advisor like everybody else did. Whereas now I can do it myself, and just being able to do a little bit more research and just knowing that what I see is how it is.

Ben, senior, College of William & Mary:

I've found it more helpful, in my opinion, to look at a degree planning product myself and map out the courses that I want to take in the future. And then consult afterwards and confirm if that's the correct path I should be taking to move forward.

Degree Works is essentially my life-saving tool going into registration. I never go into registration without looking at it, and it essentially maps my path forward. And it's been probably the most helpful tool I've ever used in college.
