Reducing Friction to Help Students Focus on Learning
Just before a significant assignment is due, a certain type of silence settles over campus. It is the sound of hundreds of students hitting a wall together, pausing, and attempting to figure out how to move forward.
Moments like this are common, but they don't have to stop progress.
When the Work Gets Challenging
I was in one of those situations not too long ago. I was looking at a screen full of collegiate-level cryptography problems, working through inverse decoding tables and one-to-one coding functions. A familiar feeling of academic imposter syndrome began to seep in as the cursor blinked and the numbers became hazy. Standard coursework had always come naturally to me, but this required a whole new level of abstract thought. It felt less like solving a problem and more like trying to translate a language I hadn't fully learned yet.
The shift from doable tasks to the kind of difficult, advanced material that makes you wonder if you belong in the room is a common experience for students.
Reframing the Struggle
When you're frustrated, it's easy to feel like you're the only one struggling. But I started to realize that the difficulty wasn't a sign that I didn't belong. It was part of the learning process. I didn't need to understand everything all at once. I just needed to use the right tools and take it step by step.
I began segmenting the large cryptography task into more manageable chunks. I organized my digital workspace so I could fully concentrate on the logic of the arithmetic rather than the disarray of my desktop. I searched through my digital archives and retrieved old notes and files I had saved in the cloud. What felt unsolvable at first became manageable once I reorganized my environment and changed my approach. Slowly, the problems started to feel like puzzles I could work through.
What This Means for Institutions
This experience taught me something vital about student success, and it's something I believe higher education leaders, IT professionals, and administrators need to keep at the forefront of their decision-making.
Students' cognitive load is already at its peak while they are undertaking extremely challenging academic transitions. We are devoting all our mental energy to writing lengthy research papers, analyzing data, or deciphering complicated polynomials. Making the rest of our college experience as smooth as possible is one way schools can genuinely help.
The seamless operation of campus technology, such as easily accessible digital archives, dependable campus Wi-Fi, and student portals that do not require a map and compass to navigate, allows students to concentrate on learning. On the other hand, it adds unnecessary noise when students must deal with outdated software, complicated administrative systems, or disconnected campus services.
Helping Without Getting in the Way
Making academics simpler should not be the main objective. The degree is worthwhile because of its difficulty. The objective should be to create a physical and digital infrastructure that supports the "productive struggle." Give us the resources, the unobstructed roads, and the frictionless technology, and trust that we will work to resolve the remaining challenges.
Learning to navigate the unknown is at the core of college. By simplifying the systems that surround the classroom, institutions enable students to concentrate on what truly matters: understanding the obstacles in front of them and progressing forward.
