After more than a decade on its previous system, Nicolet College faced increasing complexity driven by customizations, disconnected processes, and manual reporting. A short-lived transition with another vendor disrupted progress and underscored the need for a stable partner and a modern system aligned to today’s operational and reporting demands.

Ellucian quickly partnered with institutional leaders and a dedicated internal project manager to reset the transition, simplify processes, and build a modern foundation designed to support accountability, innovation, and growth.

Modernizing for Stability and Strategic Growth

Nicolet College, one of 16 institutions in the Wisconsin Technical College System, serves approximately 4,000 students across career and technical education and university transfer programs. As a small but mighty institution, Nicolet is focused on delivering high-quality service while supporting growth and innovation.

After more than a decade on its previous system, extensive customizations and disconnected processes had created complexity across student, finance, and HR functions. Reporting required significant manual effort, and systems no longer worked together as seamlessly as they once had. Over time, the environment became difficult to manage and harder for teams to navigate confidently.

An initial transition to another vendor stalled just weeks into the engagement. Leadership quickly recognized the need to regroup, rebuild trust internally, and establish a more stable path forward. Within days of reconnecting, Ellucian team members were on campus in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, helping the college reset and move ahead.

Rather than copy and paste old processes into a new system, Nicolet focused on simplifying operations. With a dedicated internal project manager and close collaboration with Ellucian Services, the institution prioritized reducing unnecessary customization and creating clearer, more connected workflows.

One of the most visible impacts has been in financial planning. Budget development, once driven by disconnected spreadsheets, is now more streamlined and transparent within the system. Teams are also beginning to see routine tasks handled more efficiently, allowing staff to focus on higher-level responsibilities instead of manual processes.

For President Kate Ferrel, modernization represents both stability and opportunity. By simplifying systems and strengthening collaboration across departments, Nicolet College is building a stronger foundation to support students, employees, and the community for the future.
