A technology like this really changes the experience for every stakeholder on campus, whether you're a student, a faculty member, or an employee."

Paul Fisher, Chief Information Officer, Seton Hall University

Seton Hall University is a private Catholic institution in South Orange, New Jersey, serving approximately 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students across three campuses. With a mission centered on educating the whole person, the University has long balanced tradition with innovation in service of its students and community.

"Teaching is our core business, students are our core business," said Chief Information Officer Paul Fisher. "That's where we started the conversation — how are we going to improve the life of the student?"

Seton Hall leadership recognized that the ability to deliver exceptional campus experiences would increasingly depend on modern, resilient technology. The University had operated a well-managed administrative environment with its on-premises Banner system, but much of the technical effort required to sustain it had been concentrated on infrastructure management rather than mission-driven enhancements.

To take the next step in its digital transformation, Seton Hall is in the process of deploying Ellucian Student powered by Banner, built on Ellucian's Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform. The Ellucian Platform delivers enhanced capabilities to campus users and allows Seton Hall's technical staff to concentrate on campus-wide enablement and high-impact strategic initiatives.

"The Ellucian Platform provides the best student information system in the market," Fisher said. "A technology like this really changes the experience for every stakeholder on campus, whether you're a student, a faculty member, or an employee."

Strengthening IT Posture and Refocusing Capacity

For Seton Hall, the move to the Ellucian Platform was driven in large part by the desire to improve its overall IT posture while reducing the operational burden placed on staff across the University. Prior to modernizing, thousands of hours each year were spent managing infrastructure, administering updates, coordinating patch cycles, testing releases, and validating changes across multiple functional areas.

"With the move to the Ellucian Platform, we get out of the business of general maintenance. We get out of the basements and the back rooms and the closed-off environments," Fisher said. "It gives us the opportunity to work with our colleagues across all parts of the business, to work with students and faculty directly, and to roll out strategic initiatives that might help the university and our students be most successful."

Ellucian's SaaS ecosystem also reduces institutional risk while strengthening Seton Hall's security and compliance posture. Leveraging enterprise-grade protections and Ellucian's dedicated security expertise allows the University to share responsibility for safeguarding its most critical systems and data.

"We won't take our eye off the ball, but knowing that we have expertise on the Ellucian team that really knows how to secure this critical application helps me sleep at night," Fisher said. "We are a SaaS-first environment. Who better to manage applications except for the developer of the applications?"

Modernizing Business Processes and Service Delivery

Beyond infrastructure optimization, deploying the Ellucian Platform creates an opportunity for Seton Hall to modernize the way work gets done across campus. Migrating from an on premises to SaaS environment enables teams to examine long-standing processes, identify inefficiencies, and eliminate unnecessary manual steps that slow service delivery.

"One of the intrinsic values of migrating from an on-prem environment to the Ellucian Platform will be the rekindling of all of our business processes," Fisher said. "We're really becoming much more efficient so that we are spending more time on the high-value interactions with our students and our faculty."

Through more streamlined workflows, improved integrations, and greater transparency, departments can operate more collaboratively and respond more quickly to student and employee needs. Tasks that once required multiple handoffs or manual intervention can be digitized and tracked, reducing frustration and improving accountability.

"This is an investment in allowing the university to do its business going forward and really unleashing the power of the students and the faculty to reach their goals and objectives," Fisher said. "The real ROI is accelerating service to students."

Ellucian Insights, Ellucian's Platform-native Reporting and Analytics solution, will also help improve data transparency across campus. The reporting and analytics unifies data from Ellucian and non-Ellucian systems into a secure, governed data lake and warehouse, enabling Seton Hall to democratize access through customizable dashboards and self-service analytics.

"Ellucian Insights promises to really put data in the hands of the people who need it to make decisions," Fisher said. "It provides the power to create your own reports and really curate the data you need to make decisions without having to go anywhere else."

Enabling a Unified, Student-Centered Experience

Meeting students where they are is a central pillar in Seton Hall's strategic modernization. Students increasingly expect university services to mirror the simplicity and immediacy of the digital experiences they encounter in everyday life.

"Students demand a very consumer feel to every service that they get from the university," Fisher said. "Modernizing to the Ellucian Platform will really allow us to put our students first."

By deploying the Ellucian Platform, including Ellucian Experience, Seton Hall will create a unified digital hub for academic, administrative, and campus life services. Students, faculty, and staff will have a single starting point to access information, complete tasks, and track progress.

"It allows university teams to focus on critical new functionality that gives students visibility into their progress, opportunities across the curriculum, and supports their success as lifelong learners," Fisher said.

A Foundation for Ongoing Transformation

Seton Hall views the Ellucian Platform not as a one-time replacement, but as a foundation for continuous improvement. With the platform managed by Ellucian, IT can focus on partnering across enrollment, finance, HR, and student services to enhance processes and deliver new capabilities.

"This is not an IT project; this is a university business transformation project," Fisher said. "Our success is Ellucian's success and Ellucian's success is Seton Hall's success."

This collaborative model enables Seton Hall to adapt more quickly to changing needs, introduce innovation with less disruption, and sustain progress over time.

"We've worked with Ellucian for more than a decade and our partnership has always been very strong," Fisher said. "They have not only the expertise in the technology, but they have intimate knowledge of the university, and they really make us feel like they're in it with us."
