I think the role of the CIO has changed a lot over time because we're no longer just technologists. We really now, today, have the opportunity and the responsibility to embrace the business measures and to understand what it is that the business is trying to accomplish and find ways to use technology as a means to help make the transformation to accomplish the business goals and the business objectives.
Success for today's CIOs really comes around their ability to build and maintain and manage solid relationships. So, I think communication is critical. I think emotional intelligence becomes a very critical thing. Understanding the much larger picture, understanding real business drivers, understanding what those are, and finding ways that technology can help make the achievement of those really efficient and actually possible.
I do think trust is the foundation of all relationships. And I think that trust is critically important. As a CIO, as you attempt to build business relationships with other units, people have to know that you're going to be able to deliver and they have to know that you understand what their needs are and there's a sense of empathy that has to come out of that trust.
And so I think you just build that trust the same way you would in any other relationship, by making the commitments that you can honor and making sure that you follow through on those things by taking the time to put yourself in the shoes of others and recognising the role that they play and the immediacy of their needs, and finding ways to make sure that their needs and their objectives come first.
And so as long as we kind of go into our relationship building that way and our communications that way, and we genuinely are worried about how do we help other business units succeed and how do we help them accomplish our goals, as technologists we'll accomplish ours along the way.
