The double impact of award recognition on campus
What winning the Ellucian Impact Award means to Saint Peter’s University
Virginia Bender, Special Assistant to the President, Saint Peter’s University
Winning the Impact Award is exciting on a number of fronts. For us, a validation of the direction we've chosen to pursue, the idea of adopting an evidence-based approach to technological advancement. And so, we knew that things were working well. But the external validation is exciting and wonderful. So, we feel good about that.
The Impact Award, it has had kind of a double impact on campus. One, it's really validated for us that our collaboration on this team approach to student success, it does have merit and has benefits to the university. And also, that we now see how it's truly impacted the lives of our students.
We serve an extraordinarily diverse student body. And more than half of our students are first generation. Many from minority backgrounds. Many from low income families. And when we see that students come to Saint Peter's with many, many barriers to success, it's very rewarding when, at graduation, students often jump across the stage to celebrate not only their own educational outcome, but the fact that, together, Saint Peters University, and their own will and determination, have been successful to push past those barriers. And they are now ready to take on their own leadership role.
Our mission is to prepare our students for successful lives, both in their careers and in a purposeful way in our society. So, we're going to continue to be student-focused, but at the same time, know that technology and optimization of technology is going to be a very, very important tool for us to continue to succeed.
