What a community college gained by moving to the cloud
Improve IT security and gain resource efficiencies
- Cloud can allow institutions to consolidate their technology and reduce total cost of ownership
- Partnering with Ellucian on cloud provisioning means benefiting from the expertise of Ellucian and Amazon Web Services’s security teams
- In-house technical support staff can shift focus from ERP operations to ERP optimization
Improved security, optimized resources, and a reduced total cost of ownership.
Joseph Moreau, vice chancellor of technology, Foothill-De Anza Community College District
The cloud is helping us in a couple of different ways. One is certainly that it's helping us from a total cost of ownership perspective. We're finding that as we look at all of the investments we make around managing our ERP—whether it be licensing, support, capital, equipment, energy, and cooling, as well as disaster recovery components—when we add up all those dollars over all of the expenditures we make, we find that moving to the cloud provides us with an opportunity to consolidate, and reduce our total cost of ownership.
I think more importantly, the way the cloud helps us meet our challenges is in extending the value for our in-house staff. We're obviously not going to get any more staff anytime in the foreseeable future, and so we have to provide our in-house technical support staff with the opportunity to really, as I say, get out of the ERP operation business, and get into the ERP optimization business.
The myth about FERPA does not allow us to store student data in the cloud, which, of course, is a myth. Or if we store data in the cloud, we lose ownership and control it. Or it will be less secure in the cloud.
Cybersecurity is something that we spend an awful lot of time thinking about. There probably isn't a day that goes by where we don't hear of some entity being breached or corrupted in some manner. And these are entities, these are large-scale entities like Facebook, or Netflix, or take your pick, that have security teams that we'll never have. And yet they still are not as safe as they'd like to be. And so, I think by partnering with Ellucian on cloud provisioning, we can take advantage of both Ellucian's security team and AWS’s security team to bring a level of expertise around security that we simply will not ever be able to afford.
